Jeangu Macrooy wrote the song Grow, with which he represents the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest, in his own words in a “dark period”. At the table The world moves on he told Wednesday that the song consists of two parts.
“Last year I had the feeling for the first time in my life that I didn’t know for a moment,” says the singer. “You get older and more mature and find out that there are no tailor-made manuals for life. I was sad and frustrated about that.”
With this feeling, the 26-year-old Macrooy wrote the first part of his song. Three weeks later the rest followed. “The second part is about accepting the fact that it lives out highs and lows that you learn and grow. “
Although the Dutch entry actually during the broadcast of The world moves on premiered, the song and the accompanying video clip were accidentally offered earlier on Wednesday at streaming service Apple Music. It was then confirmed on NPO Radio 2 Grow, produced by Macrooys manager Perquisite, is indeed the Eurovision entry.
Selection committee agreed Grow
Macrooy says he has deliberately not yet looked at the reactions that came in on Wednesday. “It’s really a rollercoaster, but I’m glad I don’t have to keep it a secret anymore.”
Cornald Maas, who is part of the selection committee for the Songfestival, says that Macrooy told him three quarters of years ago that he was working on a “piece of art”. The entire committee agreed that Grow had to be the Dutch entry.
Macrooy represents the Netherlands on 16 May during the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. Due to the victory of Duncan Laurence in 2019, the Netherlands does not have to participate this year in the semi-finals, which will be held on 12 and 14 May.
