Jeanette Dørmænen (36) has been sentenced by Romerike and Glåmdal District Court to 21 years in prison for killing her sons Mikael (7) and Gabriel (1) at Lørenskog last summer.

She is also convicted of having given incorrect information to the police and of embezzling NOK 115,000 from the eldest son’s savings account. In addition, she must pay a total of 692,000 kroner in reparation to the children’s father and the right to inherit from the sons is ruled.

The district court believes that it has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt that the killings were committed as a considered decision and according to prior planning.

“The accused had time and opportunity to weigh the pros and cons, and she chose to carry out both murders,” the court writes.

– Clear implementation ability and will

The court states that it took time before the sons died, and in the judgment a point is also made that she has killed one son, before the other.

“This shows a clear ability to execute and – will”, it says in the judgment that was first mentioned by TV2.

The punishment is in line with the claim of the prosecutor, public prosecutor Ane Evang.

– The prosecuting authority registers that the court agrees with the arguments that have been put forward, and we are satisfied with the result, Evang says to NRK.

His father’s assistance lawyer John Christian Elden writes in an SMS to VG that “the verdict is strong and clear in accordance with our view”.

It has not been clarified whether Dørmænen will appeal.

– We have received the verdict, read it and I have contacted the hospital where the convicted person is to agree that we will discuss this verdict tomorrow, her defender Gunhild Lærum says to VG.

Lighted the children’s mattress

In court, Lærum dropped the claim that her client had to be declared insane. However, the court uses the forensic psychiatric experts’ conclusion that they did not find any signs of psychosis or insanity.

The two boys were found strangled in their own home on the morning of July 19 last summer after the fire brigade responded to a report of a possible fire.

Later it became clear that the mattress in the bed where the children were lying had been ignited, which led to the development of smoke and triggered the sprinkler system.

The court believes these actions show that the killings were well thought out and a result of a logical choice.

“She removed the fire alarm and the tape over the air vent in the room, and she set fire to the mattress where the children were lying. These actions appear to be an act to also die by fire / poisoning “, it is stated in the judgment.

Dørmænen told the emergency services that it was the children’s father who was responsible for the injuries and he was arrested. However, the police quickly denied that he was involved and dropped the charge. She is therefore convicted of giving incorrect information to the police.

– Nothing in the explanation that gives motive

The doorman explained in court about failing mental health in the time leading up to the killings. The woman has explained that the cohabitation with her ex-husband drove her to the condition she was in on the day she killed the children.

During the main hearing, several letters were left in the apartment. There the mother wrote, among other things, that she would take the children with her to death.

Romerike and Glåmdal District Court believe it was undoubtedly a difficult break-up, but still believe that there is nothing in the woman’s explanation that can explain or give any motive for the actions.

“The court cannot see that there are mitigating circumstances in the case,” it says in the judgment.

The doorman confirmed in court that she was the one who committed the murders, but explained that she does not remember anything from the actual murders.

The court believes that the superficial injuries she had to her body she inflicted on herself.

The accused and the children’s father is no longer married, and she no longer bears his surname.
