Amidst a complex geopolitical landscape,Japan has emerged as the most trusted major power in Southeast Asia,according to a recent survey. The ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore released its seventh annual State of Southeast Asia survey earlier this month, revealing a significant increase in regional trust towards Japan.

The survey, which gauges the perspectives of regional opinion makers and thought leaders, indicated a notable rise in confidence in Japan.Trust levels climbed from 58.9% last year to an extraordinary 66.8% this year.

Survey Methodology and Scope

The State of Southeast Asia survey is an annual report that delves into the attitudes of individuals with influence and expertise on matters concerning the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The latest survey spanned six weeks, from January to February, capturing responses from approximately 2,000 individuals across the 10 ASEAN member states, as well as East Timor, which is currently seeking membership in the regional bloc.

Notably, the survey period coincided with the early days of US President Donald Trump’s second term inauguration on january 20.

Tomoo Kikuchi, a professor at the Graduate school of Asia-Pacific Studies at Waseda University, offered insights into the factors driving the increased trust in Japan. He pointed to several global events that may have contributed to this shift.
