Japan Hosts Last Naked Men Festival in 2024: Declining Population Threatens Tradition

2024 was the last year that Japan hosted the Naked Men Festival, which took place once every 1000 years.

For many eras in Japan, once every millennium, the Somin-sai festival of naked men was held, the essence of which was that half-naked men in loincloths gathered in a secluded temple and fought with each other. The winner received a talisman, which is believed in Japanese culture to bring happiness to its owner.

This year the festival was held for the last time. This is due to the fact that in Japan the population is rapidly declining and there are much fewer young people than elderly and old people who find it difficult to exercise.

“This decision is due to the aging of the festival participants and the lack of successors,” wrote the chief priest of Kokuseki Shrine Daigo Fujinami.

High mortality rates in Japan have been observed since the 1980s and pose a serious threat to the country.
