Jan Van Biesen stops as network head Studio Brussel | showbiz

RadioJan Van Biesen (47) is no longer network head at radio station Studio Brussel. He will be succeeded by Steven Lemmens, our editors confirmed. He is already the network head of MNM and will therefore combine the two channels. Van Biesen remains responsible for ‘De Tijdloze’, the digital channel of the station.

Van Biesen started in 2007 as network head at Studio Brussel and helped make the channel great, among other things by focusing on actions such as ‘Music For Life’ and afterwards ‘The warmest week’. He gave strong voices such as Siska Schoeters and Linde Merckpoel the opportunity to grow. Lately, however, the golden combination started to wear out. For example, the latest listening figures looked dramatically bad. The network barely achieved a market share of 6.76% last spring, the lowest reach in years. A big difference with the figures from a few years ago. In the winter of 2018, for example, StuBru was the second largest channel in the country with 11.84%.

“Time flies when you always go for it with full conviction and then also have a great time”, says Van Biesen, who will now focus on the digital radio channel ‘De timeloze’. “To be at the helm of Studio Brussel for 15 years was a naughty boyhood dream. It was a fantastic period in which I had the privilege of working closely with many people inside and outside the organization and of taking the radio heaven by storm with a team of talents. I will forever cherish the many achievements and those blissful moments with “yes we did it”, but after so many intense years I now mainly have the personal need and the professional desire for a new turn. In these fascinating and challenging media times, it is once again itching to get started with De Tijdloze radio and to make the choices that are necessary for the future of our digital audio channels. Because VRT’s ambitious plan to spoil the listeners with more digital, diverse and high-quality audio offerings from September, sounds like music to my ears.”

Steven Lemmens now has to provide a breath of fresh air. The radio maker is currently network head at MNM and now combines that job with the same position at StuBru. Lemmens previously worked for Studio Brussel for fifteen years and presented the year-end list ‘De Tijdloze’ for years. “MNM and Studio Brussel are two fantastic channels with a unique identity and their own audience,” he says. “We will continue to serve that audience as best as possible on the radio. We are now going to take major steps digitally to create new and surprising offerings, both in audio and video, for a young target group.”
