Jan Böhmermann speaks in ZDF Magazin Royale about the super rich and their role in the climate crisis. But he completely obfuscates the issue of justice.

On his return from the winter break, Jan Böhmermann will take up the issue of climate. However, the ZDF Magazin is not again about alleged terrorists of the FDP and also not about the last generation. It’s about rich people. So maybe it’s about the FDP after all, at least their clientele, but so be it.

The ZDF Magazin Royale takes up the question of what role the super-rich play in climate change. Böhmermann thinks the topic from the end. The thesis: If climate change actually causes an enormous catastrophe and civilization ends, the super-rich polluters have the best chance of survival and do not care about others. Böhmermann tackles the issue by talking about super-rich preppers preparing for a final crisis.

However, this excessive injustice is replaced by many accessories. Böhmermann fogs the ZDF Magazin audience in the tediously long introduction to the topic. It is to be hoped that not only his die-hard fans were awake to his final point: “Real wealth is not flying a private jet, but being able to protect yourself from what flying a private jet triggers.”

But from the beginning. In principle, Böhmermann begins correctly: in the role of his elitist, snooty self, the ZDF presenter claims that climate change is coming anyway and that it is just a question of “mindet”. Then he lets the most unfunny boomer have his say in a clip: Dieter Nuhr. He explains that it must be about adapting to climate change.

“If you can’t prevent a heart attack, you have to think about how you can live without a heart,” says Böhmermann, taking up the topic in this way. “Save yourself who can. The climate catastrophe is coming anyway, we just have to prepare for it as best we can.”

Böhmermann (ZDF Magazin) gets lost in digressions

Preparation is the keyword: Böhmermann could have spoken at this point about the rich preppers who, like Peter Thiel, buy plots of land in remote New Zealand and luxurious bunkers. “Normal people” either have no place in the bunkers, or only as staff, Böhmermann elaborates later in the show.

Before that, Böhmermann confuses himself and the audience of ZDF Magazin in the chaos of official responsibilities in the event of catastrophes and with a clip about a gentrified bunker. “Germany is not well prepared for any crisis,” the moderator finally said as an interim conclusion. Initiative is required.

Böhmermann arrives at prepping, i.e. preparing for disasters, for example by hoarding. “Preppen used to be a kink for right-wing extremists and has now arrived in the middle of society,” says Böhmermann, who can’t resist a dig at Springer. “Like the world, only in reverse.”

The ZDF Magazin Royale with Jan Böhmermann from Friday, February 3, 2023 is in the ZDF Mediathek accessible.

Returning to the role of his snobbish self and more than 17 minutes on the air, Böhmermann finally gets to the point. In a short clip, he lets the ARD magazine Panorama explain how many tons of greenhouse gases the average German emits per capita and compares them with millionaires and the super-rich. Then he dives into the world of luxury bunkers.

Böhmermann (ZDF Magazin) talks about climate justice without really talking about it

The question of climate justice is neglected by Böhmermann’s drivel about civil protection and preppers. This is not only a problem in ZDF Magazin, but also in society. The social aspect is left out when neoliberals in yellow, red and green wait for magical new technologies or limit their politics to appeals to individuals, while RWE, for example, is still allowed to dig 280 million tons of coal under Lützerath – beaten through by the police.

Global justice between the industrialized nations of the West and the Global South has not even been mentioned. However, this can be material for another episode of ZDF Magazin Royale. After all, the year 2023 is still young. (Max Schaefer)
