Jail for man who made and sold software for payment fraud

A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison for creating and selling computer programs to commit payment fraud. After serving his sentence, the court in The Hague has ordered him to participate in Hack_Right, a program in which young internet criminals are guided to use their ICT talent legally.

The man programmed so-called phishing panels and tikkie panels, which can be used to create fake websites of banks. Criminals lure people to these fake sites with phishing emails. These are e-mails that appear to come from, for example, a bank, but which are in reality sent by scammers.

If someone falls for it and enters their bank login details, the users of the phishing panel can watch, log into the real bank’s site and loot the account. The NOS showed how easy it is to buy those kinds of packs online.

The judge considers it proven that the man sold his software to at least 49 people. When he was arrested after intensive investigation, the police found a loaded pistol under his desk chair.
