Jadon Sancho’s move from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United seems to be only a matter of form. “As far as I know, it’s just paperwork, small details, hopefully we can announce something soon,” said coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when he was asked about Sancho at the weekend.
While the fans of the Red Devils have been waiting for the official announcement for days, there are already consistent reports about which shirt number the 21-year-old could wear in the future.
16 – this number on the back doesn’t sound particularly spectacular at first, as the best wingers of every club have been wearing number seven since Cristiano Ronaldo at the latest. The seven, who last appeared on the shirt above Sancho’s name in Dortmund, already belongs to Edinson Cavani in Manchester. It remains unclear whether Sancho involuntarily switched to another number or whether the decision for 16 was a conscious one.

But especially at United there are probably only a few numbers that combine so much history. From 1993 to 2006, legendary midfielder Roy Keane ran 470 games with that number on his back. The club icons Paul Scholes and Gary Neville also temporarily put on the jersey with the number 16.
Most recently, the jersey with the 16 belonged to Marcos Rojo, who moved to his home country to the Boca Juniors last winter.
