Jade tree: Irrigation, location, lighting, pruning, substrate and fertilization

The Jade plant is also known as the money plant. So that Having one of these beautiful plants inside our home will not only make the space cooler and more beautiful, but it also brings good luck. It comes from South Africa and is characterized by its very thick branches and very fleshy leaves, these being responsible for containing the water that will make this beautiful plant live.

With the necessary tips and a lot of care, it will also give us beautiful white or pink flowers towards the beginning of spring.

All these characteristics make the jade plant very easy to care for. and very safe and also widely used in decoration as in the interior of our houses.

Care for our lucky plant (jade tree)

1 – Irrigation

We only have to water it every fifteen days, since its thick leaves store water to nourish it. That is why it requires very little water. In this sense, for the cold months it is advisable to extend the irrigations and do them once a month. When watering it you will try to avoid wetting the leaves. It is also important to always have it with a good substrate that has very good drainage.

2 – Location

The best location for this plant is inside the home, since the internal climate is more stable. That does not mean that for the months in which the heat begins, you can go outside for several hours a day. Try to locate it in spaces away from drafts, as well as away from heat sources such as stoves, air conditioners or ovens.

3 – Lighting

the jade plant needs a lot of light, but not direct sun, because this will rot the leaves. In the same way, for the cold months, you should take care of it in humid and very wet places, because these will cause the roots to rot. Therefore the best lighting is in places where climates are stable and intermediate.

4 – Pruning

When summer or spring approaches, it is the ideal time for you to prune this plant. To do this you only have to cut the branches with a good pruning shears. Once you cut the branches, you can remove the leaves and replant them forming new jade plants, just keep in mind that before placing in a new substrate the cut wound must have healed.

5 – Substrate

You can do it yourself with your own hands. This substrate is for succulents, so it must be poor in nutrients and good in drainage. With these three elements you can improve drainage and make your plant very healthy.

  • Perlite – which allows excess water to drain easily
  • Vermiculite – this mineral improves soil structure
  • Pumice stone – is a very light volcanic rock, absorbing moisture and slowly releasing it back into the ground

To make your substrate, you must combine 2/3 parts of soil, with 1/3 of perlites or 1/3 of vermiculite or 1/3 of pumice stone.

6 – Fertilization

Never fertilize in winter or autumn, you will only do it for the hot months. The best fertilizers are earthworm humus, which is nothing more than the manure of earthworms that contain a lot of organic matter from the soil itself. Or by making compost tea, which is very simple, since compost is the product obtained from different materials of organic origin. That is why you can make a good compost with raw fruit and vegetable peels. You can also do it with egg shells, remains of yerba mate, coffee and tea. As you can also use dry grass or all the rest of a pruning.
