“Elsa and Fred” with Jacobo Morales and Johanna Rosaly Arrives in cinemas
A theatrical production of “Elsa and Fred” starring Jacobo Morales and Johanna Rosaly is making a unique transition to the cinema. Rather than a film adaptation, the play was recorded during its stage performances and will be shown in Caribbean Cinemas’ Fine Arts rooms starting Thursday, September 25th. This is described as a pioneering experiment for Puerto Rican cinema.
While similar presentations are common internationally, technical and financial challenges, alongside difficulties within the Puerto Rican theater scene, have limited such occurrences on the island.
Jacobo Morales, at almost 91 years old, expressed his joy at being involved in the project, noting its special meaning as he began his career in theater in 1949. He stated, “‘Elsa and Fred’ was another wonderful experience in the theater…Starting this project at the Tapia Theater, had a very special meaning.” He also highlighted the harmony and dedication within the production team.
The recording took place at the Yagüez theater in Mayagüez, aiming to capture the on-stage chemistry between Morales and Rosaly. Morales explained the intention is not to adapt the play for cinema, but “to use cinematography to carry it as closely as possible to how it was represented in the theater.”
Morales further reflected on the story’s enduring message, stating, “This work tells people that there are feelings that are for a lifetime and all times. Love as a starting point, humanism, illusions, the poetic aspect of life too, which cannot be put aside.” He believes the themes of brotherhood and fellowship resonate across generations.
