For more than 20 years, Mediņš has considered helping people overwhelmed by addiction to be the task of his life. During this time, there have been about a thousand of them – drug addicts, alcoholics, most often – unloved and misunderstood by fellow human beings. Together, they once restored and built the Brukna manor, the nearby church, as well as the Bārbele Boys’ School.

Less than a year ago, Mediņa was appointed dean of the Kurmene Catholic Church. During this time, the demolished Kurmene church and its extinct surroundings have changed beyond recognition. Together with the people whom Mediņš has helped, the border village has been turned into a haven of peace for many who are tired of the hustle and bustle of life.

Asked how the Covid-19 crisis felt in Kurmena, the priest asks, “Crisis? Where?”

“The only crisis in Kurmena is the lack of love, such envy. It is a huge crisis today that paralyzes a person who makes a person unable to love, love, hug,” said Mediņš.

“During this time you could see how few people really want to live and have fun, people have been deprived of something,” the priest said.

“That’s the problem,” Mediņš said in the show, “but you also know – salvation is no longer to be found around, salvation is in ourselves, so my thinking, my attitude, my inner growth is what lifts me up.
