Messi, who is currently battling Argentina in the Copa América, is said to be scribbling under a new contract this week, according to the Spanish newspaper AS. The Madrid Marca reports that he is not yet completely out.
Not insured, no new shirts
In addition, there are some other things that will come into play now that Messi is out of contract. Should he be injured in the Copa América, Barcelona will not be insured for the medical costs that FIFA covers in case of injuries.
Also, because of portrait rights, Barcelona is not allowed to sell new shirts with Messi’s name or use his image in combination with the new shirt.
Finally, it remains to be seen whether the Spanish federation sees a new signature from Messi as an extension of the old contract or as a new one. In the latter case, this will have consequences for the salary ceiling of the club set by the association.
