It’s getting hotter, China & Taiwan warships face each other

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Chinese and Taiwanese warships faced each other on the high seas today, Sunday (7/8/2022), ahead of the end of China’s military exercises in the Taiwan Strait. The four-day Chinese military exercise is a reaction to the visit of US spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

Previously, last week’s visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi made China angry. China responded by launching a ballistic missile test over the island’s capital for the first time and cutting off communications with the US.

Today, about 10 warships each from China and Taiwan sail in close quarters in the Taiwan Strait. Reuters reported that several Chinese ships crossed the median or median line in the strait, which has been an unofficial buffer separating the two countries.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said several military ships, aircraft and drones, as well as the Chinese navy carried out a simulated attack on the island. In response, Taipei sent a number of planes and ships to the strait.

When Chinese troops began to touch the center line of the Taiwan Strait, as they did on Saturday (6/8/2022), the Taiwanese side took a position that was also close to the line to monitor.

“If possible, (we will) deny China’s ability to cross (the Taiwan Strait),” the source said.

According to him, both sides showed efforts to restrain the opponent’s movements. He also described the maneuver as a game of “cat and mouse” in the high seas.

“(When) one side tries to cross, and the other gets in the way and forces them into a more disadvantageous position and ends up going back to the other side,” he said.

For information, China’s military exercises are centered in six locations around Taiwan. The exercise began on Thursday (4/8/2022) and is scheduled to last until noon on Sunday.
