ITB Lecturer and Chancellor Noise, SBM Campus Stops Lecture Activities

Bandung, CNN Indonesia

Faculty of Business and Management (SBM) Lecturer Forum Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) announced that the campus will not operate as usual starting from Tuesday (8/3). Therefore, teaching learning process not implemented offline or online.

“However, students are asked to study independently,” reads the official statement of the SBM ITB Lecturer Forum quoted on Wednesday (9/3).

Representative of the forum, Jann Hidajat said, with various considerations, the SBM ITB Lecturer Forum also stated that it would not accept new students until the system returned to normal.

“This is because the current policy of the ITB Chancellor does not allow SBM ITB to operate to serve students according to international standards that have been applied so far,” he said.

Jann further said that the cessation of teaching and learning activities at SBM ITB was the result of a prolonged conflict after ITB Chancellor Reini Wirahadikusumah revoked the right to self-manage SBM ITB in 2003 without notification and agreement of the parties concerned.

Meanwhile, on March 2, 2022, the dean of SBM ITB led by the Dean of SBM ITB Utomo Sarjono Putro, Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs Aurik Gustomo and Deputy Dean for Resources Reza A Nasution submitted a letter of resignation to the ITB Chancellor.

“Various efforts have been made to resolve conflicts related to the revocation of the right to self-management of SBM ITB, including the meeting of the SBM ITB Lecturer Forum with the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellors on March 4, 2022, but still to no avail,” said Jann.

The contents of the meeting, namely:

1. The Chancellor no longer recognizes the basics or foundations for the establishment of the ITB SBM as stated in the ITB Rector’s Decree Number 203/2003. This decree gives the authority and responsibility for self-financing and self-management to SBM ITB as part of ITB, which has been running for 18 years and has succeeded in bringing SBM ITB to a world level, with the acquisition of AACSB accreditation. The revocation of automatic self-management has killed the spirit and at the same time undermined the “building” of SBM ITB, the raison d’etre, the reason for life or the basis for the existence of SBM ITB as an innovative and “agile/agile” school.

2. The Chancellor is making a uniform integrated system (applies to all faculties/schools at ITB), despite the fact that each faculty/school has different characteristics and potentials. The system built by the ITB Chancellor has not been completed, but the old regulations have been closed. This new regulation strengthens the Rector’s position as the sole ruler with a centralized and hierarchical system, making ITB less agile.

FD SBM ITB also criticized the leadership of the ITB Chancellor who made regulations without dialogue and socialization, without paying attention to the impact on related parties, and not following the principles set out in the ITB Statutes, namely accountability, transparency, non-profit, quality assurance, effectiveness and efficiency.

Violation of these principles has resulted in material, moral, and psychological losses for SBM ITB lecturers and staff.

The FD SBM ITB then submitted a statement of attitude that had been sent to the Rector on Monday, March 6, 2022, which asked the Rector of ITB to communicate directly with the FD SBM ITB.

Meanwhile, the FD SBM ITB also stated that the best service quality standards at SBM ITB could no longer be maintained, even though the results of the self-financing efforts carried out by SBM ITB were sufficient to fund the best service quality.

This means that the revocation of the self-management principle is a form of injustice, especially for students and their parents who have paid for world-class service standards, but have not been implemented because the self-management principle has been revoked.

Considering that the new system is not completely ready, and some of the systems that have been implemented do not meet the basic values of organizing Tridarma activities at ITB (ITB Statute Article 7), the FD SBM ITB demands the following.

First, the return of the principle of self-management, and secondly, a review of the new regulations issued by the Chancellor, involving representatives of the Board of Trustees (MWA), the Academic Senate (SA) of ITB and affected units, especially SBM ITB, until there is a mutual agreement to ensure all faculties/schools at ITB have the will and ability to grow and develop in a sustainable manner.

To strengthen the above demands, FD SBM ITB decided that starting from Tuesday, March 8, 2022, FD SBM ITB will rationalize academic services. The decision is valid until there is a new agreement with the ITB Chancellor.

In addition, the FD SBM ITB will also communicate to the competent parties, both internal ITB and external parties who can help resolve this problem, so as to minimize the negative impact that is too far away.

Regarding the termination of this lecture activity, the Head of the Communication Bureau of ITB, Naomi Haswanto, said that this issue was being discussed.

“This matter is being processed internally by the ITB leadership,” Naomi said briefly.
