Italy wants to cordon off affected cities!

Rome. The Italian government wants to stop the spread of the corona virus in the north of the country and seal off the most affected cities. The Italian government announced on Saturday evening. This locks up tens of thousands of people living in these areas. In Italy, 76 infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus had previously been recorded, two people are said to have died from it.

This makes Italy the European country with by far the largest number of Sars CoV-2 infected people. So far 16 cases have been reported in Germany and twelve in France, including one death.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced this emergency measure after crisis talks with the country’s civil protection authority. “The goal is to protect the health of the Italian population,” says Conte.

In Italy, the infected spread to Lombardy, Veneto and the Piedmont region. The pathogen was therefore detected, among other things, in the woman and a daughter of the man who is believed to be Italy’s first reported Covid-19 fatality. The Italian civil defense spoke of a second victim, the death of which is probably due to the lung disease Covid-19 caused by Sars-CoV-2.

The first reported death is a 78-year-old in Veneto, the second a woman in Lombardy. The outbreak in Lombardy goes back to a 38-year-old who has been seriously ill in the clinic in the small town of Codogno since Wednesday and tested positive for the pathogen the following day.

In ten municipalities in Lombardy, schools and most of the shops were temporarily closed. Around 50,000 residents are encouraged to stay at home if possible. Major events such as services, carnivals and sports events were prohibited. Measures were also prepared in Veneto to prevent the virus from spreading further.

On Saturday morning an army plane arrived in Rome with 19 Italians who had been quarantined for two weeks on board the “Diamond Princess” cruise ship in Japan. They are now being quarantined in a military complex in Rome. The passengers of the “Diamond Princess” had hundreds of infected, two Japanese died.

Given the situation in Italy, France is meanwhile preparing to spread the corona virus. The situation in the neighboring country was “closely monitored,” said Health Minister Olivier Véran in an interview with “Le Parisien” (Sunday). “An epidemic? We are preparing for it,” the minister was quoted as saying.

The situation is also becoming more acute on the Korean peninsula: As the health authorities announced on Saturday, 229 further infections with Sars-CoV-2 were detected in South Korea within one day. The number of cases recorded rose to 433. No other country outside of China, where Covid-19 broke out in December, has reported more infections so far.

In China, the number of infections recorded in official statistics on Saturday was a good 76,000, and more than 2,300 people died of the lung disease. Experts assume that the number of unreported cases in the People’s Republic is much higher. By far the largest number of deaths and infections are still reported from the particularly severely affected province of Hubei, where Covid-19 had broken out in the million-strong city of Wuhan in December.

Friuli calls for an emergency

Although no suspected case has been confirmed so far, Carinthia’s neighboring region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia has declared an emergency due to the corona virus until July 31. This will allow the region to take measures to prevent the epidemic, said Friuli President Massimiliano Fedriga, after meeting with civil defense in Trieste on Saturday.

The decision was taken after a coronavirus death was reported in the adjacent Veneto region. Fedriga asked the Italian government to reintroduce controls at the Italian border, but the cabinet refused, Friulian media reported. According to the cabinet in Rome, a suspension of the Schengen Agreement is currently out of the question.

According to Fedriga, ten suspected cases were reported in Friuli, seven in the Udine area and three in Trieste. However, they have not been confirmed.

After two Italians have died of coronavirus since Friday, Italian President Sergio Mattarella expressed his closeness to the sick. He thanked doctors and nurses who care for the coronavirus patients. The government is planning a ministerial meeting on Saturday evening to discuss the coronavirus epidemic in northern Italy.
