Italy: This corona-free village sells houses for 1 euro – politics abroad

The dream of a house in the south – it’s affordable! Because an Italian village is giving away houses – at least almost.

Incredible: The municipality of Cinquefrondi in the southern Italian region of Calabria offers abandoned houses – at a purchase price of just one euro.

Italy was particularly hard hit by the Corona pandemic, one of the highest infection rates in the world.

Cinquefrondi at the southern tip of the country is different: the 6500-inhabitant village advertises that it is “corona-free”. Because it has no reported corona cases. With this image, the community now wants to attract as many home buyers as possible.

Stop the move

The southern Italian village has a problem: numerous young people are moving away to find work elsewhere. Cinquefrondi’s Mayor Michele Conia now wants to stop this trend. He calls his plan “Operation Beauty”.

“Finding new owners for our many abandoned homes is a key part of Operation Beauty, which I want to use to revive extinct parts of the city,” Conia told CNN.

Plans like that of Mayor Conia are not uncommon in Italy. In other municipalities, houses are also offered at a purchase price of one euro. But: The buyer usually has to pay a deposit of 5000 euros. He will only get the money back if the house has been renovated within three years.

The special deal

In Cinquefrondi it works differently: Instead of a deposit, the house buyer only has to pay an annual insurance fee of 250 euros until he has completely renovated the building.

BUT: If he doesn’t manage to renovate the empty house within three years, a penalty of 20,000 euros will be charged.

The 1-euro houses are around 40-50 square meters in size and are located in the historic old town of Cinquefrondis. They once belonged to farmers, shepherds and artisans. Around 12 houses are currently for sale. In total there are over 50 empty buildings for which Mayor Conia is looking for new owners.

If the demand is high, Conia wants to release additional houses that have been empty for a long time and whose owners cannot be found.
