Italy car market 2021: in August, collapse of 27.3% on 2020

The car market Italy 2021 continues to experience a period of great difficulty. The month of august it ends very heavily with a collapse of registrations. Overall, 64,689 cars equal to one were registered 27.3% drop compared to the same month of 2020 when the incentives then allowed 88,973 cars to be registered, in line with the 2019 result (89,710).

According to UNRAE, over 216,000 fewer cars were registered in the first 8 months of the year compared to 2019, equal to a decrease of almost 20%. The prospects are not rosy. In fact, the recent exhaustion of the Ecobonus allocated by the Sostegni bis Law Decree of last July in favor of pure electric cars and plug-in hybrids will lead to a decrease in the sales of these cars. Michele Crisci, president of UNRAE, on this issue declared:

A paradoxical situation because, as is well known, with the expiry of the Ecobonus, the complementary funds allocated to finance the Extrabonus remain unusable. In this way, the purchase of vehicles more in line with the PNRR’s commitments to accelerate the path of decarbonisation of transport and the modernization of the obsolete Italian fleet is being blocked. The solution is an immediate refinancing of the Ecobonus for the 0-20 and 21-60 g / Km CO2 bands through any regulatory vehicle available in a short time, or, in an emergency, with a partial transfer to the Ecobonus of the still resources in the ‘Extrabonus, thus immediately restarting the incentive mechanism and relaunching sales of pure electric cars and plug-in hybrids.

UNRAE hopes for a rapid intervention by the Government also for refinance incentives for the 61-135 g / km of CO2 range, the currently available funds will be exhausted in a short time. In particular, structured measures are called for and not “stop and go” interventions.

ELECTRIFIED STILL WELL

Returning to the data for the month of August 2021 of the car market, from the point of view of users there is a marked decline in private individuals with a share of 69% of the market. Loss of about half of the volumes for self-registrations with an overall share of 7.9%. Registrations of companies are down, reaching a share of 5%. Slight decline for long-term rental (15% of the market). Small positive sign, however, for short-term rental with a share of 3.2%.

Moving on to the engines, they always grow well electrified cars thanks to incentives.

Almost 1 in 3 cars registered in August is hybrid (31.7% share), with “full” hybrids reaching 8% and “mild” hybrids 23.6%. Plug-in cars (PHEV) in the month covered 4.9% of registrations, as well as electric cars (BEV) at 5% share.

Instead, petrol and diesel lose about half of their volumes. GPL models are doing well, reaching 10% of sales. 3.6% share for methane-fueled cars.

Looking at the Group results there is not much to say since the data is only mostly negative. Stellantis, for example, closed the month of August with a decline of 36.18%. The Volkswagen Group marks a decline of 27.80% and the Renault Group of 22.82%. Very few positive signs including Kia (+ 13.02%) and Tesla (+ 57.14%).

Data, therefore, strongly negative with the numbers for the month of September that could be even worse. At this point it will be interesting to understand if the Government intends to intervene as UNRAE wishes, or not.
