Italians Asked to Celebrate Christmas at Home because Covid-19 Cases are Still High

Merdeka.com – Italy yesterday recorded the highest number of deaths due to Covid-19, with 993 patients. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a ban on holidays during Christmas celebrations and it is a difficult time for all Italians who used to celebrate Christmas traditions with their families.

Health experts and policymakers have warned that the usual Christmas celebrations could add to the Covid-19 cases in Italy, the first European country to report its first local case on February 21.

Deputy Health Minister Sandra Zampa said Christmas eve mass had to end around 8:30 p.m. so that church congregations could return home before 10 p.m. due to curfew. Residents were also asked not to invite non-family people to have meals together at Christmas.

“Since December 20 residents have only been allowed to go outside their area for emergency purposes only, such as to bring single parents for treatment,” he said in an interview with La7 television station.

The Italian government also said ski resorts would be closed during Christmas and New Year.

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 has now reached 58,038, the second highest in Europe after Britain. Positive cases have reached 1.6 million or one per 35 population. [pan]
