“Given the dangerous situation, the coast guard has sent a patrol boat from the island of Lampedusa and received the 49 most exhausted people – 32 women, 13 children and four men,” the statement said.
Louise Michel’s crew reportedly sent a request for assistance to the Italian coastguard and the Maltese army on Twitter, stating that it had rescued more than 200 migrants in the Mediterranean and that the situation on board was critical.
Meanwhile, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration have issued a joint statement stating that there are currently a total of more than 400 refugees and migrants in the three rescue ships in the Mediterranean and calling for their lives to be saved.
