Louis van Gaal, Henk ten Cate and Giovanni van Bronckhorst were never approached by the KNVB. “It would have been normal if you had talked to Ten Cate instead of Rijkaard”, says Van Hooijdonk.
“It is clear that some parties feel forgotten,” says Stekelenburg. He was in contact with Humberto Tan of the Mijnals Commission, launched earlier this year to combat racism and discrimination in football and to promote inclusivity and diversity.
‘His name lands the softest’
“They believe that diversity should have played a major role in this procedure,” says Stekelenburg. “The Commission has the feeling that this did not happen. Ten Cate almost became national coach three years ago. Then at least talk to him, they say.”
Will the KNVB ultimately make the right choice with De Boer? Van Hooijdonk thinks so: “His name is the easiest.”
Nordin Amrabat, just over from Saudi Arabia, where he plays for Al-Nassr, knows a good assistant: “Wesley Sneijder would be the ideal assistant next to Dwight Lodeweges.” Van Hooijdonk: “I also read Van Persie’s name. But those guys don’t have a diploma yet. Youri Mulder would be a good one.”
‘Do not drum on the road’
Then to the premier league weekend. The new PSV goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo was taken by trainer Roger Schmidt because of his footballing qualities, but gave birth to at home against FC Emmen with his second blunder in two games. Fortunately for him and PSV, the errors did not cost any points.
