Anyone who knew anything about it said from the outset: a corona vaccine takes at least a year to come. Despite all the hopeful messages, it is now really starting to seem that they are right. “The Netherlands is waiting for a very tough autumn.”
Main contender is the AstraZeneca corona vaccine developed by Oxford. A spokesperson still does not rule out the possibility that tests of the drug will be ready in September or October, but three experts say in the AD that it is ‘not realistic’ to expect a vaccine before 2021.
Immunologist Ger Rijkers of University College Roosevelt in Middelburg fears that it will be a ‘very tough autumn’. “Now the weather is fantastic and we drink beer on the terrace. We’ll do that indoors soon. If we don’t follow the rules, things can really get out of hand. ”
The distance rule and the source and contact research are very important, says doctor-microbiologist Marc Bonten of the UMC Utrecht. “Otherwise we could just have to deal with stricter rules again.”
Rijkers recommends a flu shot. “In the autumn and winter several viruses fight for priority. Corona is now added as a newcomer. Not a good omen. ”
