The South Korean News Agency reportedYonhapThat, on Thursday, the Public Prosecution Office sought the issuance of an arrest warrant for Samsung’s heir Lee Jae-young as part of investigations into a controversial merger between two Samsung group companies.
The prosecution said it requested the arrest of Lee and two other former Samsung directors, Choi Ji Sang and Kim Jong Jong, from the dissolved management tower, or what is known as the Future Strategies Bureau.
The three are suspected of plotting to succeed Lee, his sick father Lee Kun-hee, by inflating the value of Geo Textile and reducing the value of C&T Samsung before they merged in 2015 in a way that would benefit Lee.
Lee was the largest shareholder in Geil Textile, which produces textiles, chemicals and electronic chemicals, with a 23.2 percent stake.
For its part, the Samsung Group revealed on Thursday evening a set of measures to ensure compliance of Lee Ji-young, which was previously expressed last month, according to Yonhap.
Last month, Samsung Electronics Vice President Lee Ji-young – the de facto leader of the giant conglomerate – publicly apologized for the differences surrounding his administrative succession, and pledged to abolish the “no trade unions” policy.
At the time, the commission called Lee’s “meaningful” apology, but asked him to come up with more detailed plans to support his promises.
Samsung said it will form a committee consisting of external experts who can advise on the relationship between workers and management, as well as appoint a communications officer so that it can restore public confidence.
In order to create a system that does not allow breach of compliance, the company said it would ask consulting firms to consider the problem.
The Compliance Committee – led by former Supreme Court Judge Kim Ji-hyung – was formed in February to monitor whether the company’s procedures were in compliance with laws and ethics.
