‘It is not for nothing that the national coach Veltman selects every time’

Diederik Boer thinks the criticism of Joël Veltman is unjustified. Boer was a reserve keeper at Ajax for a number of years and counts the defender of the Amsterdam team as one of the best eleven players with whom he ever played.

Boer was the first goalkeeper at Ajax for three seasons. In that capacity he played with Joël Veltman, who would line up Boer in a team with the best players he ever played with. “He is someone who gets a lot of criticism as a player, but every trainer drafts him,” says Boer on the club website of PEC Zwolle.

The former goalkeeper explains why he thinks Veltman is underestimated. “He is a pleasant person to deal with and he has the right mentality,” Boer notes. “Joël has constructive qualities and has a lot of insight into the game. It is no coincidence that the national coach also selects him.”

In the team of Boer, besides Veltman, there is also room for André Onana, Bram van Polen, Niklas Moisander, Nick Viergever, Kamohelo Mokotjo, Arne Slot, Ryan Thomas, Davy Klaassen, Hakim Ziyech and Guyon Fernandez.
