This Monday, Sciensano released new figures regarding the number of new cases of coronavirus. The average of daily infections is down 8% compared to the previous week, while there is an increase in cases in the 0 to 9 year age group.
A total of 61,361 people have tested positive for the coronavirus since the start of the epidemic. In the past 24 hours, Sciensano has reported 66 new cases.
The average daily infections are down 8% from last week (from 89.9 cases per day to 83 cases per day).
Increase in cases in children
An increase in the number of cases is noted in the group of children 0 to 9 years old. “At the beginning of June, there were 30 cases per week, in the week of June 15, there were 47,” explains Van Gucht. “We are talking in absolute numbers of small numbers, we are talking about a few dozen cases across the country,” he immediately adds.
The fact that there are more children in the statistics makes sense because, unlike the past, they are now tested. “If children are sick at school, it will be decided to test them. In the past, we would have asked them to stay home, ”says Van Gucht.
