It happened: with a delay of 9 years (and an additional cost of 6 billion euros), Berlin has a new airport

A number of Berliners and residents of the Brandenburg periphery around Berlin come to watch. They find it – in typical Berlin’s slightly arrogant indifference – “modern, clean, large or ordinary.” An elderly lady is very satisfied: “Good that the city is getting this. It is necessary for the appearance”. A young man likes it, but “for me it was good as it was before.”

It is a little over 2 pm when two planes, first one from Easyjet and then one from Lufthansa, land on BER’s new runways. In fact, they should both have landed at the same time, on two different runways. But the weather did not allow simultaneous landing. Only a few important people on board, such as the CEOs of both companies. “Glad to be here today, with a little delay”, Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr said with a joke. They are met by the Prime Ministers of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg, the Federal Minister for Transport, Andreas Scheuer (CSU) and the CEO of the airport, Engelbert Daldrup. He too is clearly relieved: “Finally we can use our airport. Finally,” it sounds.
