The figures given this Saturday by the Crisis Center about the spread of the coronavirus epidemic are green. But…

We learned this Saturday that 34 new hospitalizations for people suffering from coronavirus were recorded in 24 hours, while 32 people were discharged from the hospital. The trend for new hospitalizations is currently decreasing by 2 to 8% per day. There are also 25 new deaths, bringing the total since the start of the epidemic to 9,237. The trend in deaths is falling by 7 to 9% per day.
“Today’s numbers are good, but I’m not happy about the number of new cases,” virologist Marc van Ranst told colleagues in Nieuwsblad. Indeed, there were also 299 new cases recorded this Saturday (213 patients in Flanders, 66 in Wallonia and 20 in Brussels), bringing the total to 56,810.
“The number of new cases has stagnated between 200 and 300 for the past few days and that is not reassuring,” adds Marc van Ranst. “These cases could be the logical continuation of the deconfinement. There are more contacts and this increases the likelihood of circulation of the virus, so there are more sick people and more hospitalizations. “
And if all the other signals are green and we can seriously consider a new phase in deconfinement on June 8, the virologist would like to recall that the virus is not behind us: “Even if it becomes hard, we have to follow the rules. Finding the right balance between relaxing the rules and keeping the virus in check is crucial. “
