This is due to the fact that with age, the body becomes more of the ACE2 protein, which the causative agent of this disease uses to infect healthy cells, said Andrei Gerasimov, head of the department of Sechenov University.
“The virus needs the presence of the surface protein ACE2 to enter the cells of the lung tissue, the amount of which increases with age. Therefore, children practically do not get sick. But at the same time, there is a very high morbidity in the older generation, which is a risk group not only for infection, but also for the development of severe complications, ”TASS quoted him as saying.
