The year is not quite over yet, but the cities in the world most visited by foreign guests have already been determined. Istanbul is expected to keep its place in the top 10. The metropolis between two continents has even improved and displaced a favorite that has proven itself over the years.

According to data from Euromonitor International, Bloomberg, Istanbul will have hosted 14.7 million international tourists by the end of the year. Last year Istanbul was ranked 10th, and in 2019 it is likely to rank ninth. No longer in the top ten, New York was the only American city to be something of a regular there. For the first time on this list, the Indian capital Delhi has been replaced by New York.

In general, the trend is “Go East”. London and Paris are the only western cities in the top ten. Despite the political unrest that has been going on since June, the front runner is Hong Kong for the third time in a row. Bangkok and Macau take second and third place. This trend towards eastern travel destinations is confirmed in the Top 100. More than 40 Asian cities are represented in it.

Antalya in 12th place

Anything but a global metropolis, but in terms of international visitors, Antalya is still way ahead. The popular holiday destination on the Turkish Riviera ranks 12th thanks to 13.3 million guests in 2019, by the way, the city was already there last year.

Basis of the calculation

To compile the list, Euromonitor International counts all foreign visitors in more than 400 cities worldwide who stay longer than 24 hours and less than a year. Such visitors include vacationers, business travelers, and people visiting family or friends. Excluded are people who are employed in these countries for work or are staying there for educational purposes, as well as the military, employees of transport companies, cruise passengers and people who have left their homes due to natural disasters or wars.
