Israel kills second Palestinian in short time in West Bank raids | NOW

The Israeli army shot and killed a 20-year-old Palestinian on Wednesday in a raid on the village of Jaba’, near the city of Jenin in the West Bank. Israel is responding with almost daily raids to a series of attacks allegedly committed by Palestinians from that region. Nineteen Israelis were killed in those attacks.

The death of Rafiq Riyad Ghannam follows a few days after that of Kamel Abdallah Alwaneh. That 19-year-old Palestinian was also killed by Israeli bullets on Sunday.

Dozens of Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli raids. Israel says most of them shot at the military or threw rocks at them. At least two dead are said to be accidental passers-by.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The Palestinians see the region as part of their future statehood. Israel considers the West Bank to be of religious importance to its own inhabitants.

The Palestinian-American Al Jazeerajournalist Shireen Abu Akleh was arrested on May 11 shot dead when she reported on the unrest surrounding Jenin. According to the United Nations, an Israeli soldier fired the deadly bullet.
