UN Delegates Walk Out During netanyahu Speech Amid Intensifying Gaza Assault
UNITED NATIONS – A significant number of delegates walked out of the United Nations General Assembly hall Tuesday as Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the body, coinciding with the intensification of israeli military operations in Gaza city. the walkouts, staged by representatives from several nations, were a visible presentation of protest against the escalating conflict and the mounting civilian casualties in Gaza.
The disruption occurred as Netanyahu defended Israel‘s actions following the October 7th Hamas attacks, reiterating Israel’s commitment to dismantling Hamas. The walkout underscores the growing international concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the increasing calls for a ceasefire. This incident arrives as israeli forces continue a ground offensive targeting Hamas infrastructure within Gaza City, resulting in widespread destruction and a rapidly deteriorating situation for civilians.
The Public Committee for the Defense of Palestinian Health Rights (PHRI) alleges that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahiya, has lost 55 pounds (25 kilograms) due to “severe starvation” while detained at Ofer Prison in the occupied West Bank. PHRI lawyers claim authorities have withheld clean clothing and medical care from Abu Safiya, who suffers from pre-existing heart conditions and untreated scabies. He has not been brought before a judge, interrogated, or informed of the legal grounds for his detention as March, according to PHRI, who state Abu Safiya believes he is detained solely due to his role as a doctor.
Israeli forces detained Abu Safiya during a raid in December that shut down Kamal Adwan Hospital. The Israeli military stated at the time that he was “suspected of being a Hamas terrorist operative,” but did not provide supporting evidence. CNN has reached out to the Israel Prison Service for comment on the allegations.
PHRI asserts Abu safiya’s detention is part of a “broader campaign” of “systematic targeting and abuse” of Palestinian health care workers. The association reports that more than 100 medical staff have been incarcerated without formal charges, representing a “clear violation” of due process.
