Is there an S-Bahn for Mainfranken? concept in planning

Improving local transport in Mainfranken – that is the goal of the Bavarian Ministry of Transport. Therefore, the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) is now creating a concept for a possible “Regio-S-Bahn Mainfranken”. This was announced by the Bavarian Ministry of Transport. The first results of the study are expected at the end of 2022.

S-Bahn operation planned around Würzburg

Specifically, it is about the possible introduction of an S-Bahn-like operation around Würzburg. This affects the railway lines from Würzburg to Lauda, Ansbach, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Schluechtern and Frankfurt. Also included are some branch lines and those lines that may be reactivated. “We want to make local rail transport so attractive that even more people change trains,” says Bavaria’s Minister of Transport, Kerstin Schreyer (CSU).

Regional traffic from 2027 is the focus

As announced by the ministry, the BEG will put the study out to tender and commission it in the first half of 2022. Concrete timetable concepts are then to be developed on this basis. According to Transport Minister Schreyer, the focus will be on regional transport from December 2027. “At this point in time, the existing transport contracts for the Main-Spessart-Express and the Mainfrankenbahn expire,” says Schreyer.

Expansion of the infrastructure is still in its infancy

The concept should also deal with long-term improvements. According to the ministry, the Würzburg-Gemünden and Würzburg-Nuremberg routes are considered to be overloaded rail routes because there is also a lot of freight traffic running parallel to passenger traffic. Plans to expand the infrastructure are still in their infancy and are not expected to take effect until the 2040s.

Cities and districts should get involved

“An essential focus of the Regio-S-Bahn concept for Mainfranken is the optimal networking of train, bus and other transport services. Above all, a lot of commitment from the local communities is required here,” says Schreyer. According to the ministry, the BEG is currently discussing the rough key points for a “Regio-S-Bahn Mainfranken” with elected officials and partners in transport planning from the region. A working group is to accompany the development of the study, in which, among other things, the affected districts, urban districts and transport associations will be represented.
