is the strongest in 40 years – El Financiero

Was a small earthquake in western New York early Monday morning that alarmed people in a region that she is not used to such joltsbut apparently did not cause significant damage.

The United States Geological Survey reported preliminary a magnitude 3.8 earthquake with epicenter east of Buffalo, in the suburb of West Seneca, which occurred at 6:15 in the morning.

Seismologist Yaareb Altaweel stressed that it was the strongest earthquake in the region in at least 40 years.

“I felt like if a car hit my house in buffalo. I jumped out of bed,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted.

Local authorities confirmed that the tremor was felt in a radius of at least 48 kilometers, including in Niagara Falls, about 32 km north of Buffalo.

In Canada, the tremor had a magnitude of 4.2 and was slightly felt in southern Ontario.

Small earthquakes are not unusual in upstate New York, but they are rarely felt so strongly.

The authorities of the Geological Survey reported that the earthquake was not related to the one that occurred Monday morning in Turkey that left hundreds of people dead.

The earthquake comes on the heels of two unprecedented weather events in the region: a snowstorm that dropped up to 7 feet of snow in November, and a blizzard in December to which they attribute 47 deaths.
