Is stealing some kind of protest?

Cuban boxer Gustavo “The Cuban Assassin” Trujillo gave his opinion on social networks about the recent events for the death of Afro-American George Floyd after a police arrest in Minneapolis, a fact that has triggered a series of protests in the country and a spiral of violence.

“I have police friends who do their job well, all the police do not do what he did,” said the Cuban athlete, referring particularly to officer Derek Chauvin, who put his knee on Floyd’s neck when he arrested him, causing him to breathe while the detainee begged to be allowed to take a breath.

“Is the owner of the Target they looted a family of the police or the victim? So I don’t understand why they set fire to the store and vandalized. That is wrong, ”said Trujillo.

“If I go into Ross and start throwing everything away and stealing everything and setting him on fire, I’m doing the same thing that the policeman didto. It is already crime, “he said.

“I agree that justice be done,” he emphasized. “What you have to do is ask for it peacefully, in court,” he added, after at another point in the broadcast he evoked the protests of Martin Luther King that also transpired due to his characteristic of not inciting violence.

Trujillo commented that sometimes the same behavior of the people led to the officers executing violent actions against them, either for responding or resisting the orders of the authorities.

“Here they have killed white, black, blue, red. Look on YouTube to see how many targets the police have killed without justification, “he said.

He also remembered the police incident that caused the death in Miami of Frank Ordóñez, who that same day started as a UPS driver, but had a tragic outcome after two thieves hijacked his vehicle after robbing a jewelry store in Coral Gables. As a result, the police shot and killed several people, including Ordóñez.

“Where are the protests and the stores set on fire by that?” Asks Trujillo. “I see a stack of people on Facebook supporting the protests instead of supporting justice,” he added.

“They are taking advantage to steal, is that protesting, stealing is some kind of protest? Someone tell me. I do not find any kind of grace, “he said. “The real racists are the same blacks and I say it as black,” he said.

“My wife is white, I don’t understand. My in-laws are white and I lived with them for a year. I have white, American friends, and I go to their houses and they take care of me as if I were their brother. It is a personal concept that we have in our heads, racism ”, he explained.

“I have Haitian and slave roots, but that is already in the past, we are in the 21st century and I am riding the same plane that the millionaire can ride. I go to the same store as the whites, I buy what they buy. I travel the world, wherever I want, “he said.

“They don’t charge me more for being black. I pay the same taxes as a target, I have the letter of the car that can have a target and the same income, ”he said. “I would like Cuban blacks to have the opportunities that Americans have, so they can see that they are taking better advantage of them,” he said.

I will always say what I think. This is a delicate issue, because there is pain and a family behind that lost one of their own unjustifiably, but all the police are not like that, I have spoken to my police friends and they have told me that the Minneapolis people acted badly ”

“Now those stores that they vandalized have to rebuild them and there are people who work there who are going to be unemployed,” he lamented.

This Sunday, the Target market chain announced that it would close several stores in different parts of the United States due to the wave of protests over the death of George Floyd, the African American who died in Minneapolis after a policeman pinned him to the ground.

“We recognize the important role we play in helping our communities buy the food, medicine and other essentials they need. We apologize for the inconvenience and will reopen our stores at their normally scheduled times as soon as it is safe to do so. ” Target stated in a statement, where he specified that there would be at least 6 closed establishments.

Target’s Lake Street store in Minneapolis was one of the first to be looted and seriously damaged during the vandalism that has occurred in conjunction with the protests.

Selwyn Jones, George Floyd’s uncle, called on people not to resort to violence: “Let’s have peace, let’s figure out a way for us to prevent people of color from being brutalized,” he said.

According to Jones himself, some have tried to take advantage of the situation during the protests and the context generated by them. “Bad people are doing bad things,” he said.
