Is it true that the mutation of the new variant of COVID-19 can be reinfected and immune to vaccines?

Surabaya

A while ago, there were three health workers (nakes) in Bangkalan who died as a result COVID-19. In fact, these three health workers are said to have obtained vaccine.

A number of experts suspect that these three health workers were exposed to Variant COVID-19 from Variant B117 or Alpha and B1351 or Beta. The Alpha variant is said to spread very quickly, in the UK even its spread increases by 40 to 90%. Then, is it true that the new variant is capable of infecting someone who has been vaccinated?

Lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) and Immunology Expert at Airlangga University (Unair) Dr. Dr. Agung Dwi Wahyu Widodo explained, even though a person has been vaccinated, a person can experience the process re-infection. This can happen for several reasons.

First, because the antibody product produced by vaccination is still not high. As a result, the body is unable to neutralize the incoming virus. So the virus spreads and produces disease.

“In some cases, even a little, it can happen re-infection on the Alpha Variant. The same goes for Varian Beta which can cause re-infection even though it is not high,” said Agung, Saturday (12/6/2021).

Then the second, in certain people the possibility of antibodies produced is not too high. So, what happens is the virus can survive and cause infection.

Meanwhile, Agung said that Hong Kong and several European countries to America found that the virus was infected after vaccination or re-infection is a virus of different variants. According to him, it allows the process of re-infection.
