Is it normal to have swollen feet during pregnancy? This is the doctor’s message about preeclampsia

Jakarta

Swollen feet in pregnant women are often considered normal. However, apparently, this condition is often accompanied by preeclampsia, complications of pregnant women due to high blood pressure or hypertension. So, what are the conditions for swollen feet that need to be watched out for as a danger sign of preeclampsia?

Straightening many people’s understanding that preeclampsia is a disorder of the placenta, Gynecologist from RSIA Bunda, dr. Aditya Kusuma, SpOG, explained that preeclampsia is actually related to the heart function of pregnant women. One that is often believed to be a symptom preeclampsia is the appearance of swelling on the legs of pregnant women.

“In the past there was a triad of preeclampsia definition. First hypertension, secondly there was protein in the urine, thirdly swelling in the legs. Then if you see that many women who are pregnant are healthy, there is no (preeclampsia) but swelling,” he explained in an online discussion, Tuesday (12 / 12). 10/2021).

According to him, finding protein in the urine and swelling in the legs are no longer specific symptoms preeclampsia. Especially considering that swelling in the legs is often experienced by pregnant women who do not have preeclampsia or hypertension.

“Swelling is not specific. So it’s very difficult, we can’t see just from swelling ‘oh this is swelling of preeclampsia’. But in simple terms, swelling with hypertension must be careful. If only swelling is not accompanied by hypertension, it means that you are pregnant well only,” added Dr. Aditya.
