In the area of Friedrich Merz, speculation about a comeback of the former CDU parliamentary leader is being fueled. The Union of Values is already celebrating its return – probably a little prematurely.
The former Union faction leader Friedrich Merz (CDU) plays with the idea of a return to the Bundestag. “If he goes back to politics completely, he would also apply for a Bundestag mandate,” said his spokesman Armin Peter on Monday evening on Twitter. At the same time, Peter warned: “Personnel debates do not currently have to be conducted, it is a matter of fact.”
Merz had made a similar statement in an interview with t-online.de. There he said: “The personnel decisions are in the hands of the two party leaders and, if the Federal Cabinet is concerned, in the hands of the Federal Chancellor. These three lead the process and are entitled to have those who work in the party support them. I explicitly include myself in that. “
Merz himself had fueled speculation when performing in Verden, Lower Saxony. As a “Spiegel” reporter reported, a listener asked Merz whether he could imagine becoming a colleague of the local member of the Bundestag in the next legislative period. Merz answered “yes”, to which the audience responded with cheers.

The conservative society of value union reacted immediately to the statement: “Merz announces candidacy for the Bundestag”, value union leader Alexander Mitsch tweeted. “That gives hope for the next candidate for chancellor union“Merz’’s spokesman Peter then made it clear that it wasn’t ready yet.
In his speech, Merz criticized, among other things, the energy policy of the grand coalition. Merz wrote on Twitter: “Germany is getting out of nuclear energy and lignite and hard coal at the same time. For me, this energy transition is like open-heart surgery – without anesthesia.”
