MAINZ / SAARBRÜCKEN – The DRK blood donation service West looks to the next few months with concern. “We are facing the classic problem time for blood donation services, the summer vacation,” said Stephan David Küpper, spokesman for the organization. The need is high and there is a lot of surgery in the clinics again. But the number of donors has already decreased since the relaxation of the corona rules. “During the lockdown, a blood donation may have been a welcome change,” he speculated.

An appointment is required for the blood donation due to the corona restrictions; this regulation should continue to apply even after the pandemic has subsided. “We can plan better if we know how many people are coming. And the people themselves don’t have to wait.” In Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, healthy people between the ages of 18 and 75 are asked to donate blood; 500 milliliters of blood are drawn from each. According to Küpper, anyone who has been vaccinated against Corona can donate blood one day later, provided that no vaccination reactions have occurred.
