Is 8 million Days Gone sold disappointing?

On the official twitter account Ghost of Tsushima more than 8 million units were celebrated yesterday (we informed in In short). The head of development responded to the joyous news of the samurai PlayStation exclusivity Days Gone. But Jeff Ross did not share the joy, but instead said that similar sales at his game were considered disappointing and did not allow work to continue.

Ross left the Sony Bend studio nineteen months after the release of Days Gone. At the time, the post-apocalyptic story event with the infected had sold over 8 million copies. Another million later was provided by sales on Steam, and the Epic Games Store certainly added something. Nevertheless, Sony executives convinced the developers that they had failed, that Days Gone was not a successful game and that there was no point in pursuing it.

Samurai action Ghost of Tsushima saw the light of day in July 2020. It exceeded the 8 million mark less than eighteen months after its release, which is similar to Days Gone. Ross thus does not understand that in one game it is a success, while in another it is a failure.

Recall that last year’s former head of development Gone he complainedthat players who bought the game at a discount, not the full price, are to blame. And here’s probably a buried dog. While Ghost of Tsushima has become the fastest selling novelty in Sony’s history, it has it sold more than 2.4 million copies in just three days, so in the case of Days Gone the company was silent.

This already signals that Days Gone’s sales have kicked off discounts. Another significant difference is the evaluation. Ghost of Tsushima has a Metacritic average rating 83 percentwhile Days Gone only 71%. Another attraction is worth noting. By March 2021, more than 50% of the game’s owners had completed the Ghost of Tsushima, in the case of Days Gone it is 34%.

What is the future of both brands? Ghost of Tsushima will have a film adaptation and it is more than likely that we will see the game continue. Plans for Days Gone 2 have been thrown in the bin and Sony Bend is working on a new brand.

Bloomberg reported last spring that Sony Bend wanted to start work on Days Gone 2 in 2019, but the request was rejected. Sony then had the developers split into two teams and assigned them two projects from Naughty Dog – a multiplayer game (probably a standalone multiplayer The Last of Us) and the new Uncharted, which has been speculated on several times in the past, under the supervision of Naughty Dog.

Some employees left Sony Bend to remove their autonomy, and the studio’s management allegedly complained to Sony, demanding that they not have to work at Uncharted. They said they were afraid they would be swallowed by Naughty Dog. At the beginning of last year, they were given the opportunity devote to a new original game.
