Iron Lungs Saved This Texas Man’s Life, He Must Learn To Breathe Frogs

For seven decades he could not stay away from the iron lung, it happened when Paul Alexander got sick polio since childhood.

As a result of the disease, Paul Alexander became better known as “Polio Paul”. He could only breathe after entering the iron lung.

Iron lung is a ventilator – discovered in the 1920s – in the midst of a plague polio which hit the U.S. until the second half of the last century.

In 1959, 1,200 Americans relied on iron lungs to stay alive, but machines gradually became less common after the spread vaccine polio extensively.

In 1979, the US was declared free polio, and in 2014, there were only 10 Americans left using iron lungs.

Now, according to the Guardian, Alexander is one of only two Americans who remain dependent on the iron lung.
