Kneecap Rapper Faces Terrorism Charge in London

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, known as Mo Chara from the Belfast rap trio Kneecap, has been formally charged with a terrorism offense by the Metropolitan Police. The charge stems from an incident at a London gig last November, where he allegedly displayed a flag in support of Hizbullah, an institution outlawed in the United Kingdom.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement that the 27-year-old, hailing from Belfast, was charged via postal requisition following a thorough counter-terrorism investigation. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 18th.
Details of the Alleged Offence
According to the Met Police, the incident occurred at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, North London, on Nov.21, 2024. Mr.Ó hAnnaidh is accused of displaying the flag in such a way or in such circumstances as to arouse reasonable suspicion that he is a supporter of a proscribed organisation.
The investigation was triggered by an online video that surfaced on April 22nd. Officers from the Met’s counter terrorism command where made aware on Tuesday April 22nd of an online video from the event,
the police stated.An investigation was carried out, which led to the Crown Prosecution Service authorising the above charge.
Kneecap: Success and Controversy
Kneecap, a rap group from West Belfast, primarily performs in irish. The group consists of Mo Chara (Liam Óg hAnnaidh), DJ Próvai (JJ Ó Dochartaigh), and Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó cairealláin). The band has achieved important success, regularly selling out venues. Their eponymous feature film has garnered accolades, including IFTA awards and a BAFTA.
However,their success has been accompanied by controversy. Critics have accused the rappers of glorifying terrorism. This isn’t the first time the group has faced scrutiny from law enforcement.

– both organizations banned in Britain.
Following the emergence of these videos, Kneecap issued an apology, stating that they did not support either organization. They claimed that the footage was being exploited and weaponised
due to the group’s opposition to the U.S. government’s stance on Gaza.
