Irish offshore wind plans put on hold by developers following policy shift

In recent years, Ireland has gained a reputation as an emerging hotspot for renewable energy development, particularly offshore wind farms. Developers have halted their plans for wind farms off the Irish coast as the Irish government announced new restrictions on the financial support given to these projects. Large investments in Irish offshore wind parks are being put on hold by developers due to stricter regulations on their construction by the Government. Two major investment decisions have been abandoned, though the firms behind them have not been disclosed. Barry Kilcline, SSE Renewables’ Ireland head of offshore, confirmed the abandonment of these investments and also revealed that the company spent millions of euros on developing a wind farm off the coast of Louth on Ireland’s eastern seaboard which is now uncertain. The tougher rules jeopardize the Irish target of constructing seven gigawatts of offshore wind by the end of the decade, thus hindering the country’s objective of obtaining 80% of its power from renewables and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030. Although Climate Minister Eamon Ryan believes the Government’s policies will “guide investment and decision-making,” many investors in the industry disagree, fearing the policy change could endanger future investments. There are over 30 gigawatts of offshore wind projects under development, but only 4.4 gigawatts will be able to bid into the first Irish auction, which opens next month. Due to the policy change, several companies have reportedly started to redeploy their staff to projects outside of Ireland, according to Wind Energy Ireland.
