Play in the second Test between Ireland and Bangladesh was briefly suspended Friday morning after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck near Dhaka.
The tremor, felt in the Bangladesh capital, prompted a three-minute stoppage in play at the Shere Bangla National stadium. Players on the field remained in position while coaches and non-playing team members, along with spectators, sought shelter. At least five people were killed and approximately 100 injured across bangladesh, according to government reports cited by Reuters.
The incident occurred while Ireland was batting, attempting to chase down Bangladesh’s first innings total of 476.Despite a fourth Test half-century from Lorcan Tucker and 49 runs from Jordan Neill, Ireland were all out for 265. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto chose not to enforce the follow-on, sending his own team back to the crease.
At the close of play, Bangladesh had extended their lead to 367 runs with nine wickets in hand, thanks to an unbeaten 69 from Shadman Islam and 60 from Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who was dismissed by Gavin hoey.Shamman Islam and Mominul Haque will resume the innings on Saturday, aiming to secure a 2-0 series victory for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh currently leads the two-match Test series, having won the first Test by an innings and 47 runs. The series will be followed by a three-match T20 international series.
