The left-wing nationalist Sinn Féin party has achieved historic success in the Irish election. The result is a political earthquake. But government formation is becoming difficult.

Dhe left-wing party Sinn Féin outperformed the established bourgeois parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael in the Irish election. According to Sunday evening voters’ first preferences, Sinn Féin did better than any other party. The party has 24.5 percent of the vote, Fianna Fáil 22.2 percent, and Prime Minister Leo Varadkar’s party, Fine Gael, only gets 20.9 percent. Sinn Féin chairwoman Mary Lou McDonald called the result a “revolution in the ballot box”.
The party, which was formerly considered the political arm of the underground organization IRA (Irish Republican Army), is unlikely to become the strongest force in parliament. She did not put up enough candidates for this. She had not expected such a success herself. With the complicated electoral system in Ireland, each voter has only one vote, but can specify multiple preferences that are counted in sequence.
