Iraq, one of the leaders of the protest in Basra killed

BASSORA – There is a new victim among the activists who have taken to the streets in Iraq for months to ask for change in the country. Last night in Basra three gunmen murdered the Iraqi activist Reham Yacoub in the city center. Yacoub was the victim of the third attack in a week of the wave of attacks on anti-government protesters in Iraq: another activist was killed and three were injured when their car was set on fire.

Yacoub, 29, was a Basra nutritionist and activist who played a leading role in popular protests in Basra. Three other people were injured with her. In the square since 2018, Yacoub had been at the head of the women’s marches in particular.

The latest wave of violence against activists began with Friday’s assassination Tahseen Osama: his death caused a new wave of demonstrations in Basra. Security forces opened fire on protesters who stormed the governor’s house.

The prime minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, currently in Washington to meet Donald Trump at the White House, sacked some Basra police officers for excessive use of force and ordered an investigation into the violence that ultimately led to Yacoub’s death. Kadhimi took office in April: the third head of the Iraqi government after a chaotic 10-week period of protests.
