Iranian President Investigates Death of 22-Year-Old Woman After Major Protests | NOW

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has ordered further investigation into the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. For days in the country there have been demonstrations for the death of the woman, who died when she was arrested.

Amini was arrested on Friday by the religious police for not respecting the Islamic dress code. The police hit her in the head, after which she died in the station. The police deny and claim that the woman died of natural causes.

Raisi on Thursday reiterated the coroner’s conclusion that Amini was not beaten. “But I don’t want to jump to a conclusion,” he said at a news conference in New York. The president is there to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

The president is also angry about the sanctions the US has imposed on the vice team in Iran. Thursday accused the West of “double standards”. He pointed out the numerous civilians who are killed by the American police every year. “Why aren’t there any studies that follow?”

The country’s largest protests have been taking place in years. Raisi stressed that there is freedom of expression in Iran, but the chaos is “unacceptable”.

Iranian authorities warned Thursday that participating in demonstrations after Amini’s death is illegal. Protesters will be prosecuted. So far, 17 people are said to have died in the protests. Among them are both civilians and police officers.
