Iranian and Iraqi arrested after wrong-way driving near Heerlen | Inland

The driver from Iran was arrested for human smuggling, attempted manslaughter and aggravated assault, dangerous driving and possession of false documents. The co-driver, an Iraqi, was also handcuffed on suspicion of human smuggling and possession of false documents, the Marechaussee said on Thursday.

The Cross-border Police Team (GPT) of the Marechaussee and the German police received a signal that a vehicle en route from Germany to the Netherlands had ignored a stop sign. The vehicle was met at the Dutch border on the A76 and then drove into traffic at high speed on the N281 and A4.

Not much later, the driver returned to the A76, where a police motorcycle officer was able to avoid a collision in the nick of time. The car eventually got stuck at a gas station on the A76.

In the vehicle, the officers found items that indicated people smuggling.
