Soleimani, commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s foreign operations unit, was killed in January in Iraq by a US drone at Baghdad airport.
U.S. media, citing unnamed officials, said Iran was planning revenge for Soleiman’s death by killing US Ambassador to South Africa Lan Marx ahead of the November presidential election.
Following the news, US President Donald Trump this week threatened Iran with a “thousand times stronger” response in the event of an attack on his country.
The South African National Security Service confirmed on Friday that it had no evidence of a conspiracy against the US ambassador.
The commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard spoke to the President of the United States on Saturday.
“Mr. Trump! Our revenge for the death of our great general’s bloodthirsty is concrete, serious and real, but we respect ourselves and we take revenge with honor and justice,” the general was quoted as saying by the Revolutionary Guard’s official Sepahnews website.
“Do you think we will strike at the ambassador woman in South Africa for the blood of our bloodthirsty brother? We will target those who were directly or indirectly involved in the death of this great bloodthirsty man,” the general said.
“You should know that we will only target those who were involved, and that is a serious message.”
US-Iran relations have worsened since May 2018, when the United States unilaterally withdrew from the world power-Iran nuclear deal and renewed economic sanctions.
Relations escalated further in January when Iranian General Kasem Soleimani was killed in a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad airport in Iraq.
At the end of June, Iranian judiciary issued an arrest warrant for Trump and 30 others believed to be responsible for Tehran’s assassination.
