Iran sentenced American businessman to ten years in prison for espionage

Iranian authorities sentenced Emad Sharghi, an Iranian-American businessman, to ten years in prison on charges of espionage. This is reported by the TV channel with reference to a friend of the convict’s relatives. NBC News.

According to a family friend, Mr. Shargi was summoned to court on November 30 last year, where he was immediately charged and sentenced without a trial. Since then, according to the businessman’s relatives, he did not get in touch. At the same time, Iranian media previously reported that Mr. Shargi was arrested on December 6, a week after the charges were presented.

Emad Shargi was born in Iran, but moved to the United States as a child. There he was educated and worked in the plastics industry before working with an aviation brokerage firm in Abu Dhabi. In 2016, Mr. Shargi returned to Iran. He was first arrested on suspicion of espionage in April 2018, but six months later he was released on bail, and in December 2019, an Iranian court found no violations of the law in his actions. However, the court did not return Mr Shargi his Iranian and American passports to prevent him from leaving the country.

Emad Shargi became the fourth American citizen to be detained in Iran. In addition to him, Siamak Namazi (since 2015), his father Baker Namazi, as well as Morad Tahbaz, an eco-activist who also has British citizenship, are now in Iranian prisons.
