Diplomats condemn Iran’s refusal to negotiate compensation for victims of plane crash

Representatives of Ukraine, Canada, Sweden, Great Britain and Afghanistan have created a joint International Group for Coordination of Assistance to Victims of the Catastrophe in order to develop a common position for negotiations with Iran.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine posted a statement from the International Group for the Coordination of Assistance to Victims of Flight PS752, which says that Iran has refused to negotiate reparations for the downed plane of Ukraine International Airlines in January 2020. The corresponding statement was published on Wednesday, November 24, at website MID.

“We, the ministers representing Canada, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, express our deep disappointment that the Islamic Republic of Iran did not accept our numerous offers to meet on November 22, 2021 to negotiate reparations for the downing of Flight PS752,” the statement said.

The diplomats recalled that Iran must fulfill its international legal obligation to carry out reparations to a group of states in full, and reiterated their call for good faith negotiations and their holding by the end of this year.

“We will continue to stand in solidarity with the families and loved ones of the victims of PS752 in their deep loss and suffering. They can be confident that the Coordination Group will remain united in its goal of holding the Islamic Republic of Iran accountable for this tragedy,” the statement said.

They clarified that if Iran continues to avoid negotiations, the Coordination Group “will have no choice but to seriously consider other actions and measures to resolve this issue within the framework of international law.”

It is known that on January 8, 2020, an UIA plane crashed in Iran, which was flying on the Tehran-Kiev route. 176 people died. On board the Boeing 737 were 11 citizens of Ukraine, including 9 crew members, as well as citizens of Iran, Canada, Sweden, Afghanistan, Germany and Great Britain.

We will remind that earlier Canada assigned to Iran full responsibility for the crash of UIA… The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry welcomed Canada’s report and stressed that Tehran was responsible for the death of 176 passengers of the downed plane.

Canada also condemned Iran for failure to investigate the UIA case… Canada intends to soon propose to ICAO to adopt a number of changes to the rules for the investigation of aviation incidents.
