Iran: Germany, France and Great Britain oppose US embargo plans

Germany, France and Great Britain have rejected the US attempt to oppose the reinstatement of all UN sanctions Iran to force. The United States withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and therefore had no right to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism, it said in a joint statement published on Thursday. “We cannot support this action because it is incompatible with our ongoing efforts to support the nuclear deal.”

As announced, the US has tried to activate a controversial mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against Iran. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo submitted a letter to the chairmanship of the UN Security Council in New York on Thursday accusing Tehran of “major” violations of the 2015 international nuclear agreement. This will set in motion the so-called snapback mechanism for re-imposing UN sanctions against Iran.

It is highly controversial whether the US is entitled to initiate the sanctions because President Donald Trump’s administration withdrew from the international nuclear deal in 2018. The most powerful UN body is now facing an acid test. Reinstating all sanctions would mean the de facto end of the rules. The other negotiators want to prevent this from happening.

The most powerful body in the United Nations last week rejected a US resolution to extend the UN arms embargo against Iran, which expires in October. The USA, which unilaterally withdrew from the international nuclear agreement with Iran in May 2018, want to achieve an unlimited extension of the embargo.
